  •     Vineyard Map is a spatial information tool for Pennsylvania vineyards that allows growers to make more informed and effective vineyard management decisions. The tool uses GIS technology to integrate and analyze a variety of factors affecting the success of vineyard operations.
Growing high quality wine grapes is essential for successful fine wine production and selecting a well endowed vineyard site is the most important contributor to high quality grapes. In Europe, wine growers have searched for the best vineyards sites for centuries using the trial and error method of planting and evaluating wine quality. Newer wine production areas in the U.S. have adopted technology to help streamline this search process and make site selection easier. A land suitability model like the Pennsylvania Vineyard Site Assessment System (PVSAS) can be part of an integrated site evaluation system that is based on expert knowledge and a GIS qualitative land analysis method that includes soil, terrain, climate and biological environment characteristics. PVSAS was developed as a land suitability assessment tool to evaluate potential vineyard sites in Pennsylvania.
